What you Should Know about CFL, LED, and Incandescent Lighting
In a September 2012 article in the Post Standard, Marc Pittarelli, VP of Sales at City Electric Company, was 
asked about recent changes in lighting technology.
We’ve pulled some excerpts from the article below- What you should know about LEDs, CFLs, and Incandescent Lamps:
- Manufacturers have developed incandescent lamps that meet 2007 government standards; incandescent are not an obsolete item and have not been banned.
- The higher the number of lumens – the brighter the bulb.
- Replace 60-watt incandescent bulbs with 800 lumens.
- Replace 75-watt with 1,100 lumens or more.
- Replace 100-watt with a minimum of 1,600 lumens.
- Purchase Energy Star qualified products to ensure quality
- While LEDs have a higher upfront cost, “If you look at the financials over the life of the lamp, it makes sense to purchase them,” Pittarelli said, especially for commercial uses.”The price of LED is coming down and quality and efficacy are going up,” he said.
- Depending on the lamp, an LED bulb will last between 25,000 and 45,000 hours.
- A CFL bulb will last 10,000 to 12,000 hours.
- A standard incandescent will last only 1,000 to 2,000 hours.
- “Some earlier versions of the CFL had a yellow cast and could make a brown couch look green,” stated Pittarelli. CFL bulbs have steadily improved and can reach a color rendering of >80, compared to 60 when they first started.

Buy Green, Save Green Rebates (NYS) Local Governments: Let City Electric Help You BEFORE Funds Run Out!
The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) recently announced the Buy Green, Save Green Rebates for New York State Local Governments program.
The program has 1.1 million dollars available to encourage small municipal governments to replace inefficient appliances and equipment with energy-efficient models.
Program Details:
- The program begins September 25, 2012; Applications must be received before February 1, 2013 or until all funds are spent, whichever is first.
- Eligible entities are small municipal governments, i.e., counties, cities, villages, and towns, that meet all eligibility requirements.
- The rebates will pay 75% of the purchase price of eligible products (i.e. compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLS) and light emitting diode light bulbs (LEDs) in quantities of 10 or more).
- The purchase price of an individual item cannot exceed $4,999.00 before taxes/fees.
- The rebate cannot be combined with incentives offered by utility companies.
- The rebate CAN be combined with manufacturer rebates.
