The NAED National ‘Closing Banquet’ event held on Monday May 6, 2013 in Boston was when Clarence Martin, CEO of State Electric Supply in West Virginia, handed the gavel over to me and I officially started my term.

It was a very exciting evening and I admit I was nervous about giving a speech using a ‘teleprompter’ in front of a dinner crowd of about 500 people.  My personality tends to be a bit obsessive when it come to preparation and planning. So, in preparation for my speech, I practiced the script no less than 30 times. Ed, my husband, heard it so many times I’m pretty sure he could have given the entire presentation. Then I recorded myself to see if my voice really does have that ‘nasal’ tone … it does.

I remember an old Seinfeld episode where Jerry related a statistic that a person’s fear of death was second to public speaking.   Maybe a bit of an extreme but I do get the connection.  

Since making such presentations will be part of my duties during this year as Chair, my goal is to improve and keep the fear factor to a minimum.  The bottom line … I got through it, and actually had some fun.

 The best part of this job so far (all of 3 weeks) is that the entire NAED team makes everything so comfortable. They take all of the worry out of every task. They are organized, considerate and encouraging. I strongly encourage all NAED members to volunteer.

On a sad note ….

This conference was held at the Boston Marriott Copley Place. This was just a block away from the marathon ‘Finish Line’. The site of the terrorist bombing that happened just 2 weeks prior to the conference. It’s difficult to describe my emotions as we walked past the solemn memorial that grew as a result of those who came to pay respect.  I felt such deep sadness, anger, confusion and yet also a feeling of strength and resolve from the people of Boston.  My heart and prayers go to those affected by this act of violence.

• The successful candidate will work Monday through Friday from 7:00 am to 4:00 pm.
